The votes are tallied and the community has spoken: The Coolest Thing Made in Elkhart County is a water monitor designed and developed by SonSet Solutions.

More than 4,000 votes were cast during the campaign for 30 different products made in Elkhart County, which ranged from ice cream to RVs.

The SonSetLink™ Water Monitor, which is a universal satellite monitoring system that reports data on water systems located throughout the world, received nearly 25 percent of all votes.

The contest, which was launched in January, was part of the Vibrant Communities initiative. It was sponsored by the Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Elkhart County Commissioners, the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County and the Community Foundation of Elkhart County.

The SonSetLink™ water monitor can track anything from the number of gallons flowing from a single system on any given day to the levels of chlorination in that water.

Water systems fail, and communities in remote or war-torn areas often don’t realize it until it’s too late – or they waste time checking on pumps that don’t need maintenance. The SonSetLink™ water monitor provides data that informs maintenance crews and helps them plan routine and emergency pump maintenance . The result? Clean water keeps flowing.

“This is not water for shaving. This isn’t water for washing your motorcycle,” said Cody Hall, a mechanical engineer who has helped develop the monitors. “This is the water you drink. It’s the water you cook with. It’s the water you give your children that sustains them. It’s what life is based on and you can’t live without it.”

Without a water monitoring system, pumps that fail in remote countries could be out of order for months at a time. The SonSetLink™ has helped reduce the downtime for clean water to three to five days.

SonSet Solutions has deployed more than 750 water monitoring units to more than 25 countries across the world so far.

Diana Lawson, executive director of the Elkhart County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, said the contest was designed to showcase the DNA of Elkhart County as a community of makers and entrepreneurs.

“We make things here, well-crafted things,” she said. “This is a great place to visit, but even more than visit, this is a wonderful place to live. We love it here in Elkhart County.”
