Pumpkinvine Nature Trail’s final gap coming to a close

By Countywide, Featured News, Goshen, Middlebury & Bristol No Comments

After years of work, the final gap in the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail is being completed.

Construction crews are at work on one section of the final gap, with the remainder to be completed in 2022. The reasons for that are complicated, writes Brittany Short, president of the Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail.

(I)t takes an entire community to get this kind of thing done; those doing the day-to-day work, those advocating on behalf of trails, and those investing in them.

Elkhart neighborhood cleans up together for the good of everyone

By Countywide, Elkhart, Featured News, Goshen, Middlebury & Bristol, Nappanee & Wakarusa, Vibrant Neighborhoods No Comments

“(I)f we don’t kind of connect with one another and try to maintain the neighborhood as a whole … we can accomplish a lot more together.”

Mark Datema of Elkhart saw the power of community when he applied for a Vibrant Neighborhoods grant. Helped by a micro-grant for supplies, the residents of the Greenleaf Boulevard Neighborhood Association — representing all walks of life and income levels — came together May 22, 2021, to clear brush, pick up trash and give the streets and sidewalks a tidier appearance.

“(I)t’s wonderful to see neighborhood associations come together as a community to make sure that what’s missed is taken care of,”Aaron Mishler, the city councilman for the Greenleaf Neighborhood, told The Elkhart Truth.

Vibrant Neighborhoods calls on residents throughout Elkhart County to come together as neighbors — whether it’s a block or a street or a subdivision — for activities that are fun and beneficial to community.

Dear Resident of Elkhart County,

Since 2016, the Elkhart County Vibrant Communities movement has brought together residents from all walks of life and leaders to strengthen Elkhart County’s great communities. Now in our fifth year, we are working to improve our understanding of people’s perceptions about their hometowns and to find opportunities to make them more desirable places to live, work, learn and play. As a resident of Elkhart County, we would greatly appreciate your participation in a survey to help us learn what you think of the county and ways in which it can be improved.

There are two ways to complete our survey. The most convenient way is for you to complete the online survey by clicking here. Some of you may have been mailed a paper version with a postage-paid return envelope if you prefer to respond by mail. We kindly request that you complete the survey on or before June 10, 2021.

The information you provide in this survey is confidential and will never be linked to your name. A third-party community organization based in the region will be conducting the analysis and will keep all collected information protected and confidential.

We ask that this survey be completed by an adult over the age of 18 years old. If there are multiple adults in your household, any one of the adults can fill out the paper survey and we highly encourage the other adult(s) to take the survey online. Your participation in this survey is voluntary. Unless otherwise instructed, please check the box that corresponds to the answer category that best describes you and your situation or opinion. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Please read each question carefully.

Elkhart County and cities unite to explore funding for community development

By Countywide, Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury & Bristol, Nappanee & Wakarusa No Comments

Great news for anyone interested in helping get needed community development projects off the ground.

The cities of Elkhart, Goshen and Nappanee along with Elkhart County are collaborating on studying whether and how to tap into financial resources through Community Development Financial Institutions.

On Thursday, November 19, 2020, The Elkhart Truth’s Jordan Fouts reported:

“GOSHEN — City and county leaders hope to find new avenues of financing for community development projects through a joint venture just taking shape.

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners and the mayors of Elkhart, Goshen and Nappanee are signing on to an interlocal agreement to study the possibility of tapping into a new source of funding. The project could result in gaining access to a nationwide network of over 1,000 Community Development Financial Institutions, which represent more than $220 billion in assets.”

As entrepreneurs look to improve downtowns and neighborhoods with needed investment in houses, storefronts and commercial properties, the capital from CDFIs could be just what those projects need.

Elkhart County, we need you to invest your love in neighborhoods

By Countywide, Elkhart, Featured News, Goshen, Middlebury & Bristol, Nappanee & Wakarusa, Vibrant Neighborhoods No Comments

One act of kindness at a time — a paper heart, a cup of soup, cleaning up a yard — neighbors become closer. More than ever, neighborhoods are more important and can amplify the vibrancy of Elkhart County.

A Community Champions Roundtable on Thursday, October 29, brought together experts on building community with residents from throughout Elkhart County. On a Zoom video conference, they shared ideas about how to build stronger and more fun and resilient neighborhoods.

The program also served as an unofficial launch of Vibrant Neighborhoods, a countywide initiative which seeks to work with interested neighborhoods and connecting them to resources to organize and plan activities.

Bil Murray, who is leading the Vibrant Neighborhoods program, emphasized that there is quite a bit of flexibility in how neighborhoods define themselves. “There is no singular definition, no one-size-fits-all approach. … It’s places and people working to make things better.”

WATCH THE FULL MEETING

Sally Bawtinheimer of Elkhart said taking her family to a neighborhood event on her street a few years ago “changed her life.” Now she is working with her neighbors in the 1400-1500 block of Strong Avenue on social events and other activities to help everyone feel more welcomed and involved.

“Where you invest your love, you invest your life. When you have that, you can conquer anything,” said Bernice Radle, who spoke at the meeting about her experiences as a small-scale developer.

Radle worked in her hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., to rehabilitate small buildings in her neighborhood and breathe life back into her community.

“Our small businesses matter, they matter so hard,” she said. “These small buildings are where small businesses can thrive.”

Radle is part of a movement, the Incremental Development Alliance, that advocates for entrepreneurs and investment that helps bring capital and build wealth for a neighborhood’s residents rather than for large corporations or developers.

It’s all part of building sustainable efforts. Daniella Panetta, community building specialist for La Casa, said often neighbors unite around solving a problem, but participation declines after that problem is solved.

Ways to overcome that include starting new traditions, perhaps around events, building deeper connections through friendship, and envisioning a longer-term vision — all things that the Vibrant Neighborhoods is organizing to help create.

How to make your neighborhood even more awesome

What does it mean to love where you live?

Elkhart County is bursting with creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, with distinctive small businesses and talented artists and creators in all our cities and towns. Despite COVID-19, our downtowns have been lively. But, more than ever, our neighborhoods can be our sanctuary.

No matter what you value in a neighborhood — parks to sit or play in, blocks where you can enjoy a walk or go for a jog, or homes full of neighbors who look out for each other and enjoy each other’s company — things can be even better. Now is the time to put a little extra love back into the block where you live.

Join us for our next Community Champions Roundtable — a free Zoom workshop to learn about Vibrant Neighborhoods and how you and your neighbors can access resources and get more involved. The session with be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 29, via Zoom conference call.

Speakers include Daniela Panetta, community building specialist with La Casa; Bernice Radle, a neighborhood developer and owner of Buffalove Development of Buffalo, N.Y.; and Sally Bawtinheimer of Elkhart. There will also be time for a question-and-answer session.

Middlebury forges ahead with improvements, undeterred by pandemic

By Countywide, Featured News, Middlebury & Bristol No Comments

The town of Middlebury has stayed busy.

Pandemic or not, the town has gotten a lot done in 2020, and it stands poised to accelerate that momentum in 2021 and beyond.

“Strategic planning is a forever process,” said John McKee, president of the Friends of the Middlebury Park who participated in community meetings that led to the adoption of an updated Middlebury comprehensive plan.

Those meetings, by the way, were forced into the digital realm as the coronavirus spread through the community and in-person gatherings were replaced by Zoom video conferencing.

At 67 pages, the Middlebury 2030 plan is a comprehensive  document that organizes actions around six focus areas (read the full plan here):

  • Town Center
  • Land use and development
  • Transportation and infrastructure
  • Parks, trails and community enhancements
  • Marketing and communications
  • Education

Here’s more on the Middlebury 2030 plan in The Elkhart Truth and Goshen News.

The Pumpkinvine Nature Trail in Middlebury continues to receive improvements in 2020.

But even in the short term, Middlebury is getting plenty done.

Projects that are either finishing up or in the works within the next few months:

  • New trailhead for the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail off West Spring Street in downtown.
  • New restrooms at Krider World’s Fair Gardens.
  • Expanded fiber-optic network, bringing the promise of improved Internet connectivity.

Your input needed: What’s next for Elkhart County as we restart the economy?

By Countywide, Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury & Bristol, Nappanee & Wakarusa 4 Comments

The social and economic turmoil that started with the response to COVID-19 has been widespread in Elkhart County.

What does this mean for our vibrant cities and towns as businesses reopen and we gather again in public spaces? It’s an ongoing process to understand some of the repercussions, on our small businesses, our neighborhoods, and who we are as a community.

There have been success stories as residents and organizations took charge to help care for those in need and to lift up our spirits to keep going.

We think now is the time for Elkhart County to come together to share our insights from a wide diversity of Elkhart County’s residents, leaders and community champions. Vibrant Communities Conversations are the first steps in that process of forming a community-based, resident-driven response, and we want you to be involved!

Two public listening sessions took place in June 2020, and focused sessions also took place with niche groups.

A report on these public input sessions is forthcoming.
