It’s late May in Elkhart County and that can only mean one thing around here: Quilt Gardens in all corners of Elkhart County are being planted.
This annual tradition has delighted residents and visitors for 11 years, and it takes a lot of sweat and toil to plant, water, weed and tend the gardens. For years, Janet Buccicone organized the planting and care of the Quilt Garden at the Elkhart County Courthouse.
Janet has relinquished that role and other volunteers have joyfully taken on that task, but we’re so thankful Janet loves Goshen so much that she dedicated her time and energy to creating a thing of beauty for Goshen.
In the Good of Goshen’s series, Goshen Through My Eyes, Janet said,
“What spurred my passion for serving the community? Because I’ve seen the difference it makes. I’ve seen our community change. I’ve seen the Quilt Gardens develop through volunteer work. I’ve seen Goshen First Fridays develop through the work of volunteers. I don’t remember how many years ago, but all the sudden people were saying, ‘Let’s go downtown on First Fridays!’ or ‘Let’s do this downtown tonight!’ — and now, it’s become this tremendous event that people from all over the region love to come to.”
