It is hard to imagine Carla Darr without her being surrounded by a bunch of smiling children. She loves teaching, guiding them and just hanging out with her students – past, present and, yes, future. An elementary school teacher for over 30 years, Carla has made a profound impact on the lives of thousands of people throughout Elkhart County. She believes that a teacher can have the best lesson plan on the planet, but a child will not learn if there is not a relationship built on trust. Trust, she says, “cannot be measured on a test.”
Carla is currently teaching second grade at Mary Beck Elementary. Carla was Elkhart Schools’ Elementary Teacher of the year for 2017-2018. This is what the school system said about her: “Carla spends countless hours outside of the school day in the community attending events and supporting her current and former students, and is also actively involved in fundraising for her students. Every day, she looks each student in the eye and tells them how happy she is to see them. She cherishes the days when she gets to celebrate her students’ success, and is thrilled when former students reach out to tell her how well they are doing.” High praise, indeed, but very well deserved.
Carla is a long-time volleyball coach for school teams and for local clubs. She emphasizes fundamentals and having fun. She has inspired those she has coached to love the sport so much that their passion is now being passed on to their children.
In those rare moments when not engaged with “her kids,” Carla enjoys friends, family and the Cubs. She has recently learning the joys of homeownership. However, with a legion of loving and loyal former pupils she has some pretty good help.
