John Contreras is today’s Vibrant person!
Five years ago, John Contreras was very ill and facing death. He was worried, but in his words, he did not want to “make any foxhole promises.” John is a devout Christian, though, and he did pray. In his prayers, he promised to live “to the max.” He committed to share his joy and his faith with all of those he had a chance to meet. Today, as Family Pastor at Grace Brethren Church in Osceola, John gets to do that on a daily basis.
He also gets to spread some good vibrations in the gyms and playing fields of Jimtown High School. John not only serves as chaplain for several of the school’s sports teams, but he is also scorekeeper and runs the music at many of the athletic events. Nathan Dean, the Athletic Director of Baugo Community Schools says that John “is always willing to help if he can. He is available and will come at a moment’s notice. He loves God and loves our kids.”
John has been in the area for four years and he has already made some strong relationships with kids at the high school. It is that bond that gives him the chance to be a positive influence and those ties have tended to last. Through social media, he keeps in contact with young people he has met over the years.
Jimtown High School is a family affair for the Contreras family. John’s two sons go to the school. His wife is an employee and John will substitute teach there.
In telling us about John, Mr. Dean, the AD, informed us that he is also a very good DJ. “I get a kick out of it,” he says with a laugh. John works hard to develop playlists that “can jive with everyone at the game, including the officials, players, school administrators and fans of all ages. As he travels to different arenas and ball fields, he listens carefully to see what gets the crowds going. If it pumps people up, he will be sure to play it, as long as the song is family friendly, of course.
Because this is March and this is Elkhart County Indiana, it’s time for a little madness. Here are 5 songs John thinks are “musts-hears” when thinking about hoops:
- “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond
- “The Time is Now” by John Cena
- “Remember the Name” by Fort Minor
- “Champion” by Carrie Underwood
- “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz
Finally, if you knew John’s email address you would have a good idea of where is NCAA allegiance is at. We know that email address and we’re not telling, but “Go Hoosiers!”
