Our Vibrant Person for Friday is Lindsey Calvert!

Lizard Loves Mustache is an unusual name for a company, but this is no ordinary business. Here in the RV Capital of the World, we think it is quite extraordinary. So is its owner, Lindsey Calvert. Lindsey is an artist, designer, carver, painter and has several other skills. She uses them all to make fun and imaginative fur costumes. It is an art and a craft and a laugh and a giggle all in one.

Lindsey was raised in southwest Michigan. She had lived in the southern part of Indiana for several years, but moved to Elkhart County to be closer to her family. She is happy to be here.

Perhaps it comes with her artistic leanings, but Lindsey has a sense of humor that ranges from wry to wickedly delightful. She laughs easily and often. Some might say her work is a wee bit quirky.

Lindsey’s customers are called “furries.” According to social psychologist, Dr. Courtney Plante, “Furries are fans of media that feature anthropomorphic animals—that is, animals who walk, talk, and do otherwise human things.” To some, this may seem a bit odd but think about this. Most of us have been raised with characters like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Winnie the Pooh, and Sonic the Hedgehog. For some, they are heroes. To want to dress like them or something akin to them is actually not far from the norm. It certainly can be fun.

Lindsey has been building costumes for over 10 years. She has been doing commissions since 2012. The process is time-consuming and calls for tremendous attention to detail. Heads and hands are first carved out of foam. Eyes are painted. Then the sewing begins. Bit-by-bit the costume takes shape, going from foam and fabric to something that is quite amazing.

Since she started working professionally, Lindsey has made ponies, cats, foxes, dragons, an elephant and even a rhinoceros. Dog costumes are the most popular. Each is unique and some are spectacular. Lindsey’s favorite? It’s always the one she has just finished.

Lindsey recently completed a very special commission. We are going to tell you about that in an additional post later today.

Lindsey admits with a smile, hers is “a little bit different kind of business.” She knows the name of her company is one-of-a-kind. Being a little different can be a good thing. That is even truer when you love your work, do it extremely well and delight people with what you make for them. That is Lindsey Calvert through and through.

P.S. – Lindsey is on the left in the picture.
