Wellfield Botanic Gardens earns the top spot in a new nationwide study and puts another Elkhart County quality-of-place success story in the national spotlight

Sometimes you have to look beyond your own backyard to appreciate just how special your backyard really is. And according to a new nationwide study, one of the very best destinations in America is growing right here in Elkhart County.

Wellfield Botanic Gardens has been ranked the #1 botanical garden in the United States.

The national study, conducted by outdoor apparel brand KÜHL, evaluated visitor experiences at 407 public gardens across the country, including destinations in major metropolitan areas and some of America’s best-known botanical institutions. When all the numbers were tallied, a 36-acre garden in Elkhart, Indiana, stood above them all. Wellfield earned an impressive 95.9 overall score out of 100, based on an average rating of 4.79 stars across 1,000 visitor reviews and a remarkable 96.6% positive visitor sentiment score—the highest in the entire study.

For those of us who call Elkhart County home, that’s something worth celebrating.

“This is an incredible national recognition for Wellfield, but I also think it’s a recognition of something much bigger happening throughout Elkhart County,” said Jon Hunsberger, Executive Director of the Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Communities don’t become great places to live or great places to visit because of one attraction or one project. It happens when people invest in creating Well Crafted experiences and places that make their community better. Wellfield is an extraordinary example of what that kind of vision and investment can become.”

Taking on the Biggest Gardens in America

The KÜHL study wasn’t simply a list of an editor’s favorite gardens. Researchers analyzed visitor reviews from public gardens across the United States, combining average star ratings with sentiment analysis of visitors’ actual comments about their experiences. Only gardens with at least 500 recent reviews were included in the final rankings. The result put Wellfield ahead of botanical destinations from Colorado, Ohio, California, Iowa, New York, South Carolina, Arizona, and beyond.

According to the study, visitors consistently value botanical gardens that provide beautiful and peaceful surroundings, diverse plant collections, educational opportunities, and experiences that leave them feeling relaxed and restored. Apparently, visitors think Wellfield does those things exceptionally well. And that’s no small achievement for an attraction that began as a community idea little more than two decades ago.

From a Community Vision to a National Destination

Wellfield’s story is, in many ways, an Elkhart County story. The Elkhart Rotary Club first conceived the Gardens in 2002 as a community service project celebrating the 100th anniversary of Rotary International. In 2005, the project was turned over to the newly formed Wellfield Botanic Gardens Board of Directors, and work began to transform the property into the extraordinary destination visitors experience today.

The setting itself is remarkable.

Wellfield encompasses 36 acres—nearly half of them water—on Elkhart’s historic North Main Street well field, a property that has played a role in supplying hydraulic energy and drinking water to the City of Elkhart since the mid-1800s. Today, that historic property has been transformed into a living museum featuring more than 20 themed garden experiences.

Visitors can wander through an English-style garden, experience the sights and sounds of the Waterfall Garden, cross bridges and stroll alongside ponds, explore the Children’s Garden, or slow down for a quiet moment surrounded by plants, water, and nature.

The Conversation Garden’s commemorative paver walkway creates personal connections between visitors and the space, while Wellfield’s Quilt Garden becomes part of the larger Quilt Gardens experience along Elkhart County’s Heritage Trail each year.

A Place to Gather, Learn and Connect

Wellfield has become a place where Elkhart County gathers.

Throughout the year, the Gardens host educational opportunities, workshops, seasonal programming, and special events. Summer evenings bring Groovin’ in the Gardens, combining live music, food, and the natural beauty of the grounds, and the Elkhart County Symphony traditionally begins each new season with a performance at Wellfield.

When winter arrives, the Winter Wonderland Holiday Lights program transforms the Gardens into an entirely different experience. Families celebrate milestones there. Couples get married there. Children explore there. Volunteers work there. Visitors discover Elkhart there. And local residents return again and again.

That combination is exactly why Wellfield’s national recognition matters from a Vibrant Communities perspective.

“The places that attract visitors are often the same places that make residents proud to call a community home,” Hunsberger said. “When families have beautiful places to gather, when children have places to explore and learn, when we create opportunities to experience nature, art and music close to home—that’s quality of place. And when visitors see those same things and say, ‘I want to experience that,’ that’s when quality of place becomes an economic and tourism asset, too.”

Growing a Vibrant Community

There’s an understandable tendency to associate America’s best cultural attractions with its biggest cities—a museum means Chicago, an extraordinary garden means New York or California.

Except sometimes you don’t have to look that far.

Sometimes extraordinary is right in your own backyard.

Transforming a municipal well field into one of the most highly regarded botanical gardens in the country didn’t happen overnight—it took vision, investment, and countless donors, volunteers, and community leaders who believed something beautiful was worth building.
